Stadium concourse with cast brick arches and returns

Accessories for thin brick formliners.

Caulkless corners, arch returns, underlayment, soldier courses and rustication, made by Advanced to fit its thin brick liners.

Kyle Field, Texas A&M. Arches, returns and coursing, all cast. Advanced Formliners.

Advanced rail strips meeting at an overlapping joint

What the accessories do on the bed.

Corners with no caulk

Caulkless corners and edge caps turn the brick into a return or a window opening. There is no caulk joint to run and no squeeze-out to grind off the finished panel.

No concrete under the liner

Underlayment strips go on the rails and every 4 feet across the bed, and the liner sheets lock over them, so concrete stays out from under the liner at the joints.

Details that repeat panel to panel

Soldier courses, headers, rowlocks, arch returns and rustication come as parts. A banding detail or an arch is set once and casts the same on every panel of the job.

Made and patented by Advanced

The parts are made by Advanced in Sparta, Wisconsin, to fit its own liners, and the line carries US 10,060,143 B2 and two design patents. There are Australian-format versions (ASTL), and a part that is not in the catalog is tooled when a job needs it.

The parts.

Codes and part names from the Advanced catalog. Most parts come in series variants: the 1000 series parts fit the 1000 and 4000 beds, the 2000 series parts fit the 2000 and 3000 beds, and the header and rail strip fit the 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series. Ask Bob or Dawson for the cut sheet with dimensions.

Caulkless corners and returns

Turn a corner, run a return or line a window or door blockout without caulking the joint by hand. The corner liners go down the sides of a blockout and the edge cap runs across it, and both index to the brick coursing so the brick turns the corner without stopping and restarting.

Takes off the bed: Caulking every corner by hand, then grinding the squeeze-out off the finished panel.

Arches and arch returns

Cast a true arch with the coursing following the curve. The universal arches come in stacked and half bond so the arch matches the field pattern rather than fighting it.

Takes off the bed: Laying out and cutting an arch by hand on the bed, which is slow and rarely repeats identically panel to panel.

Underlayment strips

The liner sheets lock over these strips. Edge underlayment goes on the side rails of the bed, horizontal edge underlayment on the top and bottom rails, and underlayment strips every 4 feet across the bed, so concrete cannot migrate under the liner at the joints.

Takes off the bed: Concrete under the liner at the sheet joints, and the cleanup on the brick face that follows.

Coursing details

Soldier courses, headers, and rowlocks as real parts, so a banding detail is set once and repeats exactly across every panel on the job.

Takes off the bed: Hand-setting a banding course panel by panel and hoping it lines up across the elevation.

Transitions and rustication

Move between brick and a smooth or textured field, or cut a deliberate reveal into the panel, without an improvised edge.

Takes off the bed: Building a one-off transition out of scrap on the bed, which never quite repeats.

Rails and brand-specific parts

Hold a run straight over long pours, plus parts tooled for a specific brick line where the standard corner does not fit the unit.

Takes off the bed: Re-cutting a standard part to suit a brick it was never dimensioned for.

Part numbers by series.

Each part is cut for a liner series. These are the part numbers Advanced lists, with the series each fits. Ask Bob or Dawson for the cut sheet for the one on your job.

How they go on the bed.

From the Advanced installation guide. The accessories are glued down and the liner sheets are not.

Casting bed layout showing edge underlayment on the rails and underlayment strips every 4 feet

Wall panels

  1. Edge underlayment strip (EUS) on the side rails. Start at the top left and work down, overlap the strip joints, and line the joints up with the control joints marked every 4 feet.
  2. Underlayment strip (US) every 4 feet across the bed, left to right and top to bottom, cut flush at the rails.
  3. Horizontal edge underlayment (HEUS) on the top and bottom rails.
  4. Glue the strips down. The liner sheets go over them, which locks the strips in place and keeps concrete from migrating under the liner at the horizontal joints.
Casting bed layout with a window blockout lined with caulkless corners and edge caps

Window and door blockouts

  1. Caulkless 90 degree corner (CC4, CC8 or CC12) down the sides of the blockout. Leave the first and last joint so they run past the blockout at the top and bottom, and overlap the joints between pieces.
  2. Caulkless 90 degree edge cap across the blockout, butted up to the overhanging corner joints.
  3. Glue the corners and caps down.
  4. Lay the liner sheets, trimmed back 1/4 inch from the joint so they overlap the corner and the cap. The liner is not glued.
